Applecross - a spectacular peninsula in Wester Ross

Although many people refer to the small community at Shore Street as Applecross, the name Applecross actually refers to the peninsula which comprises the small communities, known as townships, scattered along the coast of the Peninsula. The scenic beauty of sea and mountains combined is arguably unmatched anywhere in Scotland. The views across the Inner Sound, where the water is influenced by the Gulf Stream, are spectacular and the rugged profile of the Cuillin of Skye, Raasay, Rona and the islands of the Outer Hebrides provides a magnificent panorama.

Applecross bay is one of the largest sandy inlets in the Western Highlands and is ideal for sailing, boating and sail boarding. Kayaking can also be organised with local tuition and guiding. Walking for all levels of fitness is available, from gentle strolls through woodland to hill walking and climbing in some of the quietest mountain areas of the Western Highlands. Wildlife abounds and includes pine martens, otters, seals and red deer. Many varieties of bird life inhabit the Peninsula and, for the lucky, and observant, the Golden Eagle may be seen. Porpoises and occasionally whales can also be seen in the Inner Sound. Sea fishing is available from the shore, and brown trout fishing on the hill lochans. Within easy reach are Attadale Gardens - voted one of the best gardens in Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle, and the Brochs at Glenelg.

There is a well stocked village store and post office, and a community owned filling station. Fresh shellfish can be purchased locally and award winning smoked fish is available at Applecross Smokehouse. At Kyle there are trips in a glass bottomed boat the Seaprobe Atlantis and seal trips from Plockton..

There are three places to eat in Applecross, the Applecross Inn and the Potting Shed Restaurant both offering excellent local seafood, and the Junction which offers a wide range of snacks and meals..
